The retail price of electricity in Australia puts it among the most expensive in the developed world according to a recent report from Deutsche Bank. The constant upward march in prices against a simultaneous downward shift in the cost of solar means more Australian can make the jump to solar without any government support. The switch to solar will effectively cap the cost of electricity and in most cases result in an immediate fall in the monthly utility bill. This development has genuinely caught utility companies around the world off guard as it represents a fundamental shift in the power between consumers and suppliers. The recent actions by AGL and Origin to push aggressively into the solar rooftop market despite falling government financial support is the best signal to us that households have a real opportunity to fundamentally reduce their overall spend on energy and should carefully examine all current solar installation offers and soon to be released solar leasing plans from the utilities.
