The variation in performance from one sector to another each year can be truly astounding, so much so that sector trends can sometimes overwhelm company fundamentals. Even the best Internet stocks crashed in 2000. Of course, it’s not always so extreme, but being in the right sectors and avoiding the wrong ones can make be a significant factor in generating returns.
