The 2020 Coronavirus has become a cultural meme, like Kony 2012, or bitcoin in 2018. I’d guess most people on the planet have talked about it in the last 24 hours.

The doctor line seems to be that it’s not that bad… more people die from influenza every year.

There are 17,000 confirmed cases and 360 deaths, which suggests a mortality rate of 2%.

But the disease is growing so fast that most of these cases are in the early stages of serious pneumonia.

A better comparison would be the death rate vs the rate of people who’ve actually recovered and walked out of the hospital.

And how many have recovered? 487. Updated numbers from John Hopkins here.

So a similar order of magnitude of people are dying as recovering. That doesn’t sound good… and suggests the mortality rate is substantially above 2%.

Worse, it’s clear that people are contagious before they’re symptomatic. This is actually quite common. When you fall ill, some of the most obvious symptoms are your bodies own defenses. 

By the time you’re spluttering you might not even be contagious at all.

This seems to be the case here, which makes the whole thing quite dangerous. To be most accurate, we could say that the mortality rate for confirmed cases admitted to hospital is much higher, as there may be many more with mild symptoms. 

The Chinese response escalated significantly about a week and a half ago, when the last flights were landing in Australia. I’d guess that locking down 60 million Chinese is quite likely to have an effect on transmission rates… but we won’t see that in the numbers for at least a few more days.

As an aside, it’s been a source of constant annoyance to me that no-one takes the common cold, ie coronavirus, seriously. This knocks us all down flat multiple times a year, but doctors simply shrug, and the professional verdict seems to be that there are too many types to treat effectively. Perhaps more time and capital should be spent looking at how coronaviruses are the same and whether that offers any druggable targets. Hopefully a benefit of this sorry saga is that a lot more capital attention is directed here in the future.

But what’s the relevance to your portfolio? Outside of Asia, markets have largely shrugged this off.

And so they should. These kinds of things are temporary affairs. SARS, MERS, AIDS… these did not mark good times to sell stocks.

The 1918 influenza epidemic - which hopefully forms something of a worst case scenario, with 50 million deaths on a much smaller global population - marked the beginning of one of the best decades for stock markets ever.

Given the advances in genetic technology and the rapid development of antibodies for known genetic targets, there's a good chance we have a vaccine within 12-18 months.

There are already reports that one of Gilead's antiviral medicines is effective, after curing one of the few coronavirus patients in the United States. 

If the virus starts spreading in Australia, I’ll certainly be working from my Tamarama home office. We can talk on Zoom. But I won’t be selling any stocks.

Could I suggest that it is perhaps problematic to compare the current Coronavirus epidemic with previous epidemics such as SARS and MERS? It is true that markets around the world rebounded strongly after these earlier events, however, this made sense as the vast majority of listed stocks around the world were only indirectly impacted by these epidemics. But unlike in 2002-03, when China faced the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak, today the country is the 'workshop of the world'. There would surely be hundreds of Australian stocks today which have major operations in China. If the disease continues to spread, and results in the shut-down of manufacturing hubs such as the Shanghai region and Ningbo city, that would almost certainly have a direct impact on a swathe of ASX listed stocks. The impact would not be indirect, as in earlier epidemics. Potentially, the impact of the current epidemic on global stocks could thus be much more significant than the earlier examples cited here.

On the other hand, there's no actual cure for HIV, hepatitis, syphilis and ebola. You may be able to suppress the virus but it's doubtful we can fully eradicate it from the human body. The question is, will we be able to contain the virus from spreading? Maybe in China and developed countries they can slow it down but if this spreads to Vietnam, Thailand, India and Africa, clearly, this will have a long term detrimental impact on global GDP growth. And watch out for 2nd generation mutations. Most likely, this is going to impact real economic growth at a time when asset prices are arguably already over inflated.

I agree Lloyd, if the disease ends up in under-developed regions such as in Sub-Saharan Africa that could make tackling the epidemic far more problematic. Over the past few days there have been reports that major cities in China's Zhejiang province such as Whenzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo are in 'lockdown', with strict limits on movement (see link below). This is a major manufacturing region, and I suspect this could adversely impact numerous ASX listed stocks. If someone was to put out some research into the stocks that have major operations in the areas of China that are being impacted by the epidemic, I'm sure it would be of great interest. https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3049298/c...
