Canaccord’s Marcus Freeman on seizing opportunity in a crisis

Launching a stockbroking firm at the height of the 2008 GFC sounded like madness, but Marcus Freeman and his partners did it anyway.

Marcus Freeman could hardly have picked a worse time to start a new stockbroking business. It was 2008, and the GFC maelstrom was blowing through markets. Online broking was threatening the traditional model, and trading commissions were being sliced. Freeman, along with his partners Warwick Grigor and David Barlow, decided to push ahead regardless and formed BGF Equities.

After surviving the GFC in 2011, Canadian Group Canaccord was eager to invest in the fledgling firm, taking a 50% stake and giving the local business access to a global network. Today, Canaccord Genuity Australia has approximately 550 people. Along the way, it has acquired competitors Patterson Securities and, more recently, Queensland icon Wilson Advisory.

Under Freeman's leadership, Canaccord has risen to the top of Australia's capital-raising league tables while building a $40 billion wealth advisory group.

Every stock market cycle is symbolised by the rise of a fresh stockbroker, and since the GFC, it has been Canaccord.

Freeman started his working life as an accountant before moving into banking. He worked in both Melbourne and London for various outfits, eventually landing at Bell Potter. Always keen to run his own show, Freeman took the plunge just when it was hardest. Such has been Freeman's impact; he was recently appointed Global Head of Capital Markets for Canaccord Genuity. Meanwhile, he remains CEO of the Australian business. It will be a busy time with a hefty travel schedule.

In this episode of Success and More Interesting Stuff, Freeman shares the story behind Canaccord's rise in the Australian broking and wealth management industry.
