Nimble, diverse and scarce
What do a garden centre, an Indian food company, an IT service provider and a video game maker have in common? According to Jonathan Armitage, chief investment officer at MLC Asset Management, they all meet the investment criteria of MLC's well-established private equity arm.
Armitage explains that these businesses have proven themselves extraordinarily nimble and opportunistic in a period of uncertainty.
One of the reasons why we think that private equity plays such an important role in people's portfolios is because the businesses tend to react very quickly both to changes in economic circumstances and market conditions.
MLC has over 20 years of private equity experience, and Armitage says the resilience they are currently observing in their portfolio companies is consistent with the experience during the GFC. In this short video, he talks in more detail about the unique attributes of private markets.
