Overnight Update: The US stock market edged higher on Tuesday as Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said markets should expect the central bank to continue to follow the low interest rate path laid out by her predecessor, Ben Bernanke. Treasury prices fell. The dollar rose against the yen. Gold futures extended their climb to a fifth consecutive session. Oil futures held their ground near $100 a barrel, but struggled for direction after a five session climb as traders readied for the week's updates on US petroleum supplies. European stock markets posted a fifth straight day of gains. Retailers posted some of the biggest gains in London after a round of solid UK sales numbers for January, while Barclays led decliners after a lackluster earnings report. London: BHP up 1.87% Rio up 2.31%. New York: BHP up 2.75% Rio up 3.24%. Base metal prices traded mixed.
