We remain of the view that domestic growth is currently below trend with the economy navigating a period of transition from the mining boom to an infrastructure led recovery. The evidence continues to suggest the economy is gradually building momentum with interest rates at record lows, an uptick in housing construction and the Aussie dollar remaining firmly below $US1.00. However, at a domestic level, we remain cautious of the Abbott government unleashing its razor gang at the forthcoming federal budget. Though tough measures are undoubtedly necessary following six years of Labor government spending, some of the already flagged changes are likely to have a negative impact on certain sectors of the economy. The debt levy on higher income earners (said to apply to those earning more than $180,000) will negatively impact market sentiment toward consumer discretionary stocks.
