European deflation or global salvation? Financial markets have experienced wild price swings in recent months given growing concerns about Europe, but it would be wrong to think that this represents a return to 2008 and 2011. Matt Sherwood, Perpetual's Head of Investment Markets Research concludes that disappointing growth and earnings results show how fragile the European recovery is and the key risk brewing is deflation, but this has to be sustained to become a problem for investors. QE programs over the past twenty years have not structurally lifted economic growth or ended deflation - only economic reforms can do that and investors have realised that the much heralded European recovery has failed to materialise and as such the risks of deflation are rising.
