Overnight: US stocks fell to session lows, with the Dow shedding as much as 140 points, on signs of any progress toward a budget deal unravelling. Treasurys slipped and the US dollar rose against most major currencies as US lawmakers continued to work on a deal to raise the debt ceiling and reopen government. Gold futures slumped to a three-month low, erasing the prior session's gains on signs that the standoff in Washington could end this week. Oil futures retreated. Rio Tinto led UK stocks higher on Tuesday after an upbeat production update, while shares of Burberry fell sharply on news its CEO will leave to join Apple Inc.
