Today's economic news in the US shows once again, the economy is in no danger of a recession. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index - a weighted average of 85 indicators - rose from +0.47 in September from -0.25 in August. More importantly, the 3-month moving average (the preferred metric for this series) climbed from +0.16 to +0.25. Keep in mind, only values below -0.70 show an increased likelihood of recession. Meanwhile, jobless claims climbed 17,000 last week, but are still at a very reasonable 283,000 - close to a 14 year low. The 4-week moving average also dropped 3,000 to 281,000, the lowest level since May 2000. Basically, the US seems to be resilient in the face of a global slowdown, at least for now.
