Microsoft's earnings reports suggest a shift away from hardware such as XBOX and Nokia, towards a software ecosystem. Given Apple's strong growth in BRIC countries, a major threat is Xiaomi, a Chinese electronics producer of high-quality consumer electronics such as smartphones.
