It is a truth which is not always acknowledged in financial publications and commentary, but a successful long term investment portfolio is more about carrying a reliable protective backbone than it is about picking today's winners in the share market. Carrying on from the recent theme of what makes a good long-term oriented investment portfolio, my suggestion this week is that while defensive strategies have worked well in years past, investors nevertheless should not ignore the need for some attacking power.
