Let's Talk Trash

Nathan Lim

Lonsec Holdings

Energy-from-Waste (EfW) is a progressive solution to Australia’s growing waste management problem. We look at the trash problem in Australia today and conclude technology already widely used overseas would work here as well. We consider the case of Covanta Holding Corp, who is the biggest EfW operator in North America. We consider the economics of their Essex facility and conclude the cost of the facility would be lower than current landfill gate fees in NSW. Besides being cheaper than landfilling, the facility would produce baseload electricity. A modern EfW facility is not the incinerators of old with the Essex facility producing emission levels lower than a natural gas-fired power station. EfW is a sustainable solution to an ever growing global problem. Too much valuable material is simply being buried and wasted that could otherwise go towards making ours a more sustainable society. EfW is part of this sustainable future and an attractive investment destination. (VIEW LINK)
