Overnight: US stocks surged on Wednesday, lifting the S&P 500 close to its record, as the Senate reached an agreement to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling. Treasury prices of all maturities moved higher, pushing yields lower on vulnerable short-term bills as well as longer-term notes, and the dollar jumped. Gold futures rose as traders weighed the likelihood that Congress would soon reach a deal to end the shutdown and raise the nation's debt limit. Oil futures climbed back above $102 a barrel, finding support from growing optimism that the US government will soon reach a deal. The UK's benchmark stock index extended gains into a fifth straight day, as US lawmakers raced to hammer out a last-minute deal.
