Some 2,000 people are registered to attend the International Mining and Resources Conference in Melbourne this week, partly sponsored by the Victorian state government and bringing together policy, technical and investment streams. Without an emphasis on company presentations or financial intermediaries, the gathering has displayed a more objective view of the sector than found at many industry conferences. At least two presentations have argued that, despite a cyclical loss of value, the sector remained expensive. They argued that the rate of discovery and development was too low or that the culture of the industry did not favour a sufficient commitment to shareholders.
