The rare earth elements industry is shaping up as one of the most competitive parts of the mining industry judging by a report in June from the Standing Committee on Natural Resources in the Canadian House of Commons. The committee heard that Canada was lagging other countries in its spend on rare earth material research and future production. It identified 28 projects in the advanced exploration or development stage and another 28 in the resource identification stage. Of these, 19 were in Canada and nine in Australia. One committee witness described Canada as being in a race with Australia and the US to develop an industry. The committee was told that hundreds of thousands of jobs can be created across various industries that use rare earth metals but it was also warned that capital market conditions were making realisation of this potential difficult without government support.
