Today I want to provide three charts that speak volumes as to the dislocation in recent years between stock markets and price volatility. To preface the charts, consider the historical correlations of stocks and stock price volatility, which is around -0.8 (from a ratio of +1 to -1). Meaning a very strong correlation between stocks up and volatility down - bearing in mind this works in vice versa. Firstly, a chart of Australian, German, US and Japanese stock markets, overlaid with each corresponding markets price volatility indexes. The clear divergence since 2011 is distinct. (VIEW LINK)
