Current market volatility is just a taste of what's to come when the market gets greater conviction that US interest rates will rise. Asset prices have built in expectations of very low interest rates for a prolonged period. But lower interest rates have to end. Sooner or later the Fed will raise rates. Investors are keenly awaiting the results of this week's Fed meeting which will update its current thinking on when rates should begin to rise. At the moment, markets are pricing in a rise in US rates at the back end of next year. But if those expectations come forward a bit, investors will have to rethink their positions.
