John Abernethy, Chairman of Clime, is finding it difficult to identify attractive investment opportunities in Australia
John Abernethy, Chairman of Clime, is finding it difficult to identify attractive investment opportunities in Australia. When pressed on how he would invest $1000 Abernethy turned his attention to China and specifically the companies that are levered to the emerging Chinese consumer. There are two themes driving his thesis: Firstly, expectations are for a material increase in the per capita income in the enormous Chinese population. Forecasts suggest that per person income in China will move from current levels (circa: $9,000) to $16,000. Secondly, as more of the population moves from poverty to a lower/emerging middle class all of this increased income will be spent on consumption rather than savings. Abernethy says the multiplier effect of these two trends is fantastic. Unfortunately, the brands and businesses that appeal to the Chinese consumer are international rather than Australian companies. The outcome.... Clime are now establishing an international fund. Exclusive here
