The proposed Albemarle Corp and Rockwood Holdings merger is highlighting the change underway in the lithium industry as it adjusts to expectations of rising demand from battery producers and looks for ways to service the battery manufacturers. Orocobre (ASX: ORE), developing a lithium brine deposit in Argentina, is running a little late (although insignificantly compared to many miners) but appears to be hitting the market at the right time. Orocobre has been establishing itself as a specialty chemicals manufacturer (having purchased a former regional Rio Tinto subsidiary in August 2012). Larger sector players without the resource exposure could begin to look more closely at what Orocobre has to offer. The Orocobre share price has risen 23% since the end of June. Whether or not it attracts corporate attention, it is now only a few weeks away from the start of commercial production.
