We’re witnessing “A truly unique event”

“We’ve never in history, run sophisticated economies, with sophisticated financial systems, through declining populations. It is a truly unique event.,” said Mark Burgess from Jamieson Coote Bonds at the recent Livewire Live investor forum. “[Declining demographics] affects all asset classes in strange ways… House prices don’t work when demographics don’t work.” He thinks we need to find new ways of measuring economic success if we’re to navigate these waters. It’s not all bad news though; he points out the positive demographics in countries such as India, Indonesia and parts of Latin America. “They have to be the powerhouse for the next period.” In this video he discusses the importance of diversification, writing down your investment process, and the implications of negative rates.
