Income investing on the ASX
Dr Don Hamson, Managing Director of Plato Investment Management, says there are a number of characteristics that have made the ASX an attractive market for income investing over a long period of time. For retirees the franking credits system means that the current income level is around 6.1% - making the ASX one of the highest yielding equity markets. "In the current macro environment it also means that Australian equities is also one of the highest income generating assets that an Australian can invest in at the moment that is liquid." Hamson says that the yield on the market has remained 'stickily high' at around that 6% level for the last three or four years despite the low interest rate environment.
